Sidney Basil Cheesman
Sidney and his brother Archie came west in 1925 with their mother Annie. When his mother married Jesse Rule in 1926 the family moved to Jesse's homestead outside of McCord. Sidney attended the Varsity School along with his brother Archie. Archie had worked for Fred Trickle who owned the homestead located about 1.5 miles south of Jesse's. By 1934, 16 year old Sidney would be living with Archie on the Trickle farm. In 1940, Annie and Jesse separated and she would join her boy's there. The family would live in a small soddy on the property. A lumber extension was built on to the soddy in about 1941 to accommodate the family.
Sidney joined the army in 1942 and would serve four years abroad. He trained in Moose Jaw and Terrace, British Columbia. He enlisted with the No 1 Canadian Provost Company (RCMP). This company provided military police support for the 1st Canadian Infantry Division. During his four years abroad Sidney was posted in various country's including the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Holland, Italy and the Mediterranean area. In 1943 while posted in England Sidney was able to spend a weekend visiting Ralph, who had also enlisted in the army and was in the same area on leave. In 1946 Sidney was discharge from the army and returned to Canada. Mary, Gwen and Ralph were on hand to greet him on his arrival in Toronto. He spent a week visiting his family there, then returned to the farm in Saskatchewan.
Sidney took over farming of the Trickle homestead and eventually took ownership of the property. In 1951 Sidney married Ellen Nelson. Ellen is the daughter of Peter and Ida Nelson. Peter and Ida were both born in Sweden and immigrated to the United States. Their first few children would be born there. The Nelson’s immigrated from the United States to Canada 1911. Ellen was the first of the remaining children to be born in Canada. Sidney and Ellen had known each other since childhood as they lived in neighboring farms. Ellen had said that she always knew that she would marry Sidney. Their first child, Murray, was born on the 15th of September 1952. The family would continue to live in the small house until Sidney built a new home on the property in 1955. On August 23rd of that year, daughter Kathi Lynn joined the family.
When Murray married his wife Lorraine in 1973 they would have a home just yards away from his parents. Sidney would remain on this farm until his recent move with Ellen to a retirement home in Lafeche, located 49 km north east of McCord. Sidney’s grandson Jeff, his wife Geminice and their daughter Denise Marie, born in 2007, are now living in the home his grandfather built. Their second child Cydni was born in 2009.
Kathi married Kenneth Ralph Stull. Kathi and Ken live in Clemenso which outside of Hudson Bay, Sask. They have four children, Jason Ralph born in 1976, Logan Sidney born in 1978, Trina Lynn born in 1980 and Jacquline Ellen born in 1982. Jason has two children with Tami Leason, Izak Ralph born in 2001 and Bennatt Carver born in 2004. Jacquline has three children with Brian Kirby Jayden Nathan born in 2003, Jaxon Gabriel born in 2004 and Brandon Tyler born in 2007.
Sidney was able to spend enjoyable time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sidney passed away on the 21st of February 2008. Ellen continued to live in the retirement home she shared with Sidney until December of 2009. Ellen passed away on the 10th of February 2010 at the age of 96. Sidney and Ellen were both cremated and are buried together in the Mankota Municipal Cemetery, the same cemetery as Archie Cheesman and Ellen’s parents Peter and Ida Nelson.
