Children's Placement Lists

These lists are being transcribed from documents held by http://heritage.canadiana.ca. They are mostly for children coming from the Workhouses are are not complete. Not all are here, this is an ongoing project to help transcribe this information to make it available to us. A link will be provided to take you to the original document scan on Heritage. They are not listed here in any  particular order, use the search bar to see if your BHC is listed. The original records are difficult to read, so this is done to the best of our ability. Sometimes there are several pages for one list, fip through the pages to find yours.

Samuel and James Raymond

I found James well settled, attending school regularly and doing very satisfactorily. His brother Samuel is not so contented and is very anxious to obtain a situation on a farm. He has had a number of fairly good situation in Toronto but has changed so often that he seems almost discouraged with city life, but is really anxious, I believe, to do what is right. Like yourself, I may say that I have taken a special interest in both these boys and want to see them do well. I suggested that i would write you on my return to the department and ask you, if possible, to try and find a place for Samuel with some farmer in Central Ontario. If you think you can do anything for him alon this line I should be pleased if you would write him, and if not asking too much, to advise me also.

Letter dated Feb 14 1904 - Dr. Stephenson's Home, Hamilton

Ernest Paul

http://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.lac_reel_c7836/1230?r=0&s=2

I desire to inform you that I have inspected Ernest Paul Paull) (1903) with David Robinson, Ingersoll. I am well satisfied with his situration as Mr. Robinson is undoubtely as prosperous farmer. Paul does not, however, care for farming. He finds Mr. Robinson and the family equally considerate towards him. While he is a healthy and robust looking boy it seems that he is troubled with a kidney complaint which distresses him. At times he passes blood. It is not of recent developement he states. Before coming to Canada he was troubled in the same way. His employer has consuled a physician and the boy is receiving medical treatment.

Letter dated Feb 16 1904 to Middlemore Homes from Inspector Smart - Thomas Alway and William Peglar

http://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.lac_reel_c7836/1233?r=0&s=2

I regret that through an oversight your letter of a recent date referring to rumors concerning the treatment of Thomas Alway and William Peglar was not answered before this. In the case of the former, I have instructed the Society's Agent at St. Joh to make a careful inquiry and report the fact to me at his earliest convenience; in the case of the latter, I understand that the boy has been removed. It is the desire of the department to prevent the ill treatment of poor and necessitous children and such cases when brought to notice will be deal with in as promp a manner as possible

Letter dated Feb 15 1904 regarding Thomas Staplay,William Dunn, Thomas Francis//I have to report on the condition of the boys Thomas Staplay and William Dunn. I called on these boys today at the Walter Street Hospital and found that Thos Staplay has been there about two months.//He had been placed with Michael Roan, of Thurse, Quebec sometime in October 1903, where he remained until 2 months ago. He told me that his food three times a day consisted of bread, butter and tea. His boots and mitts were worn ones of Mr. Roan's. That on one cold day just before Christmas he fell into a creek while doing his work and was not allowed to go into the house to dry himeslf but was kept outside at the work and in a short time had his feet and hands badly frost bitten; this necessitated his going to the hospital//The boy also sstated that he was abused by his employer and he showed me a long scar on his leg which he says was done with a horse whip.//This boy Staplay is a very bright looking little fellow and is the type of a boy that under ordinary circumstances should do well//The other boy William Dunn - aged 16 - who was plaed with Patrick McDonald at Buckingham in July last, came to the hospital on Feb 11/04.//This boy told me that he was ill treated by Mr. McDonald; that he was struck with a pitch-fork and one of the bones broken in his arm above the elbow;that he was obliged to continue work, but that McDonald tried to use something to cure his arm. Then about a month ago he was again struck by McDonald while at his work and his wrist broken. This latter is not healed yet. I saw the scars and lumps on the boy and believed his story to be true.//The boy was also made to work on Sundays in the fields as on other days and was only allowed to attend church three times during his stay with McDonald. He stated that he was kept oout of doors to cut wood with McDonald until his hands and feet were so badly frozen that he was sent to the hospital on the above mentioned date.//While at the hospital the Sister Superior told me of a boy, Thomas Francis, aged 13, of East Templeton, when went to the hospital on Thursday and died on the following day, Feb 13, 1904. She stated that everything pointed to ill treatment and she was sure the boy died through neglect.

Letter from Inspector Smart, dated May 9th 1904 regarding John Noakes, from the Edmonton Union place with Samuel Stinson PO Omemee, Victoria County I desire to state for your information that:
"This boy insists that he is not hapy or contented although he has a good home and is, I am convinced under good influences. There are a number of children in the family - one boy and several girls. The boy and Noakes get along very agreeably, but Noakes complains that the girls continually carry out tales about him, which unually results in punishment for him. He is a stout, healthy boy and I believe is not without fault. They find him stubborn, a characteristic I could easily understand from his apearance. He is rather a good looking boy and a nice type. His work is distastful becaue he is required to do housework. The family are members of the Salvation Army and Noakes attends with them. There appears to me to be a spirit of discrimination in the household and a lackof encouragement for the boy.

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of you rletter of the 11th instant with reference to John Noakes. In my opinion it would be rather unfair to his employer where he transferred and for this reason I made no recommendation for a change. I felt, however, that you should have the information for future references.

Letter to Inspector Smart dated September 2 1904 regarding Annie Karnwall
From G. Bogue Smart, Inspector of British Immigrand Children and receiving homes, Ottawa. Sir, A Mr. Fairweather who is spending the summer in King's County called at this office to report a case of illtreatment to an immigrant girl. He stated that shewas doing a man's work in the field, such as mowing, raking, ect and that she had no education. I questioned Mr. Fairweather as to the truth of the matter, if he could make the carge of illtreatment from personal knowledge, and he replied that he only knew of it from the talk of the neighbourhood. I also informed him that is should hardly be the case for the children were inspected once a year by an Inspector from Ottawa. The Child's name is Annie Karnwall, with Edgar Day, Day's Landing, Greenwhick, Kings Co. If you think it advisable, and so instruct me, I could go to the home and investigae the case. Dominion Immigration Agent.

Letters concerning Annie Macpherson boy William Barron
Weir Oct 28th 1904
Dear Mr. Merry, In reply to yours of the 25th would just say that is was sad news to us all that you and Mr. Smart have decided to take Willie away from us. He is all the comfort that we have. Of course I will not persist againt the rules ofyour home and would just say that he would be fourteen in December coming and if there is a new bargain to make that I am willing to comply to any agreement that is reasonable.  I thought he was our boy until eighteen, that was to say that we were to clothe and school him uneil fourteen and after fourteen was to pay wages up to eighteen. I am aware that you have the right to remove him from our home when you like but if there is anything on our part that we have not complied with please let me know by return of mail. I will also bring Willie or send him as requested but it nearly breaks our hears to thiknk that we have to give him up. He and us have cried ever since we received your letter. Willie won't eat or sleep ever since I told him that he had to leave us, and as you stated in your letter that Mr. Smart wanted to remove Willie last fall I cannot account for the same. Both times he has been to see him he gave us to understand that he was perfectly well satisfied with the progress and Willie our treatment. All of your agents have had full privilege to talk to hom whenever any of them called, and all that I can say that they seemed to be perfectly well satisfied with him and us.  I have not heard any complaints about the treatment from your people. If there is any you will confer me a kindness to let me know by return of mail. Our mail comes to Weir Tuesday, Thursdy and Saturday, and if we do not hear from you before the seventh of November we will bring or send him on the ten a..m train leaving Harrisburg Depot. I remain yours turly, Andre Pepper, Weir, ontario

What shall I say to this pathetic appeal? These poor people feel badly about losing William Barron, and he at going away! I suppose I can onlly leet the matter go thorugh as --arranged. Yours faithfully W. Merry

From Mr. Smart Nov 2 1904

In reply to you rletter of the 31st ultimo, in reference to William Barron c/o Andrew Pepper, Weir, I beg to say that I inspected this boy on the 29th of August and found such an improvement that my report will, I think, justify you in allowing him to remain where he is for the present. From Mr. Pepper's letter which you enclosed, and which I return herewith, it would appear that the longer they have the boy the more attached to him they are growing. I certainly think it would be a hardship to Mrs. Pepper were he taken away.
