Provincial Inspection Reports

Report of inspection of Home childrenDates of Creation1875, 1886Physical Description1 volume of textual records

Scope and ContentSeries consists of an inspection report of Home Children who had been sent to Ontario in the several years preceding 1875 and 1886, when the inspections were carried out. The report is in the form of a register which includes the following headings: name; age; where [the child was] born [city / town or in some cases country are given]; if [the child has] been in [a] workhouse and where [city]; when [s/he] came to Canada [year]; with Miss Rye or Miss MacPherson; religion; name and post office address of guardian or employer; wages per month; nature of employment; remarks on conduct; etc.

Children are listed as having been sent out to placements in the following communities in Ontario: Newcastle, Bradford, Mount Forest, Guelph, Chatham, and London. While most of the children listed in the report are English, names of a few Irish and Scottish children also appear. These inspections were performed under pressure from British authorities and humanitarians who were concerned about abusive living conditions.
