Barnardo children (and infants of Barnardo girls)
75 Barnardo children are buried here in two unmarked graves, one plot has a single stone on it, erected by Walter Allebone in memory of his brother. It does acknowledge other children are buried there, but no names of these children. The second plot, yards away, is unmarked.
Credit for research work:  BHCARA Research Team led by Lori Oschefski
Monument creation: R J Huggins of Orphan Boy Films
17 infants of Barnardo girls and 58 Barnardo children

Independent film maker, Orphan Boy Films - Ottawa (www.orphanboyfilms.com) in collaboration with the British Home Children Advocacy & Research Association,  is very pleased to announce that after years of painstaking research into the lives of 75 children buried in two unmarked graves in Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto's West end, a monument will be erected to honour these poor souls.

The monument has been created from a rough block of granite sourced from a Quebec quarry, sand-blasted and adorned with a piece of plate steel from a ship , complete with a brass porthole. The 1950's ship, the MS JADRAN is symbolic of the type of vessel that would have carried these 'orphans' to the new home country and ports in Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax.

In early 2016, the BHCARA started a crowd sourced campaign, GoFundMe, which was successful in raising over 16 thousand dollars to commission and complete this monument.  The monument will pay tribute to the over 100,000 children, girls and boys, who ranged in ages from toddlers through 18, who came to Canada from 1869 thorough 1949 as domestic help and farm labour from Britain.

The graves of the 75 children buried at Park Lawn Cemetery is a poignant reminder that although many children thrived in Canada, many did not. Our country is dotted with the graves of lost Home Children, sadly, many will never be found. Every child who came to Canada deserves to be recognized including those who perished.

"I believe there is a reason why these children were revealed to me", states Lori Oschefski, whose partner, Paul Jackson “accidentally” discovered these plots. "When I discovered these graves, a purely serendipitous discovery, I knew instantly that through their lost voices, the story of the plight of our British Home Children must come to light in Canada. It was through the media coverage of my fund raising efforts for the monument, that I was connected to RJ Huggins, who immediately began production of his film."

"When the monument fundraising campaign was brought to my attention for the first time, it so moved me, that I did something that I told myself I would never do as a filmmaker. I decided then and there to create a film of the story of my father, who was one of these children and help tell the stories of the thousands of  "Home Children" and their descendants.  Two years, fifteen hours of film and a journey that has taken us to England, Nova Scotia and throughout Ontario to document the stories both uplifting and tragic. It has been a cathartic and humbling journey that still has some miles to go.  I'm very proud to have had a hand in the design and production of this monument, that would have not be possible without a great team of people associated with it", said RJ Huggins of Orphan Boy Films.

Bob Huggins took over the memorial project last year and it has been largely due to his efforts that this monument has come to fruition with a design totally unique and befitting of the memory of all these precious children. We owe a great debt of thank yous for the generous donations made for this project to our members and the public, and to various businesses.  We also would like to thank Park Lawn Cemetery for the donation of the cement base and special thank you's to Jordan Elliot, President - Marine Recycling Port Colborne, Ontario for the donation of the ship steel and to Barnardo's who gave generously both in a donation to the monument and research help with the children.

Mary Whitticar
Death: 11 Jul 1910
Aged: 23 years 11 months

daughter of William Edward and Mary Ann Whittaker

"Miss Whitaker had been given to fits of melancholy...."
Sad words to mark a tragic end to a young life. The year is 1910. A 17-year old 'housemaid' is found dead of poisoning in the backyard of her former employer. She was Mary Whittaker/Whiteacre/Whitticar (depending on which document you find) and she was a Barnardo Home Child. Bates and Dodds Funeral home is still on Queen West in Toronto, where it has been since 1884. It was from this funeral home that Mary was buried. We don't know where.
 Mary's death certificate reads:
Mary Whitticar, 11 Jul 1910, 18yr8mo, b England, domestic,
Physician: R J Whelan,
Informant: Wm G Stuart of 901 Queen St W,poisoning from
carbolic acid/2-3hrs, convulsions, Toronto, York
From the Toronto Star issued dated July 12, 1910:
"A GIRL TOOK POISON, WAS FOUND IN GARDEN
Went Into Yard of Former Employer's House & Drank Laudanum and Carbolic Acid
Grieved because she had to leave her former mistress, Mary Whitaker, an English
maid, committed suicide at the home of C.E. Linstrum, 56 Albany Avenue. Miss Whitaker was brought out by the Barnard home several years ago. She had been employed as a domestic in Mr. Linstrum's family for a year and a half, and had always been treated very kindly by them. As the family were leaving the city, she was told she would have to leave on Saturday, and it was supposed that she had taken another place in the city. On Sunday night, she visited the Linstrums. She left, and then returned, and then finally left, and was not seen again until her rigid body was found in the garden yesterday, with a bottle of laudanum and one of carbolic acid by her side.
Miss Whitaker had been given to fits of melancholy, and it is supposed that it was in one of these that she took the poison. Miss Whitaker was a little over 18 years of age. Dr. A. Wilson, medical officer of the Barnardo Home, was called, and he, with Coroner Dr. Wilson, decided an inquest was unnecessary. the remains were removed to Bates and dodds undertaking rooms, Queen west, whence the funeral will be held tomorrow morning."

Charles Bradbury
Death: February 2, 1897
Aged: 15 years 2 months

Son of John and Elizabeth Bradbury of Southhampton, England

Charles arrived in Canada at the age of 13 in 1895.
Wednesday, February 3, 1897
BRADBURY (Toronto) Feb. 3 - Yesterday afternoon Coroners Armstrong of York township, and Aikins, of Toronto, opened an inquest on the chard remains of a lad, Charles Bradbury. The inquiry was held in the house of Edward Hunter, lot 12 third concession of East York. Only the evidence of one witness was taken, and an adjournment was made.
Remains of the lad Bradbury are now in a barrel, on the doorstep of a house on this farm. He was a Barnardo boy, and eighteen months ago he was turned over to Stewart and John Blain, who were lessees of 100 acres from Edward Hunter. The Blain men lived in a small house with the boy and looked after themselves. There were no women employed in the house.
On Monday evening the outhouses, stables and barn rented by the brothers were burned. It is claimed that the dead boy set fire to the premises in a fit of revenge or an imagined injury. The story is that about 6 o’clock, John Blain had some words with the boy who was in a sulky fit. The young fellow threw himself on the ground and refused to get up. Blain gave him a slight kick, and Stewart Blain carried the boy into the house. They had supper and the two Blains drove away to a neighbours a mile away.
At 7:30 o’clock, A.E. Hunter, a son of the owner of the farm, saw that the cow stable rented to the Blaines was on fire. He gave the alarm but was too late to save from burning the seven head of cattle stabled there. The fire spread rapidly and the neighbours came quickly and with willing hands rescued the horses from the adjoining stable.
The fact that the coroner has commenced an investigation appears to be sufficient grounds for all kinds of rumours. The body of the boy was found on Tuesday morning, in a box stall in the stable which was burned. How it got there is the mystery. If the theory of the neighbours is correct, the boy after being chastised set fire to the premises out of revenge, and then our of fright buried himself in the straw in the stall, and remained there to be burned. Others think that is not the case, and a thorough investigation should be held.
The loss amounts to $3,000. The buildings were insured for $1,100. The Blains had no insurance on their property and they refused to estimate their loss. Article from: Glanbrook Heritage Society

Eric Carter Hall
Died Feb 22 1905
Aged: 13 years 8 months
Parent unknown when he arrived into Barnardo's care in 1901 from the Lambeth Union Workhouse. Research by Alison Williams has shown his parents to be Mary Ann Malendine and John Hall of Lambeth, London, England

Eric arrived in Canada in 1901, shortly after he was admitted to Barnardo's. He died in the Toronto Sick Children's Hospital of an acute inflammation of the lungs. He was the sibling of Frank Albert HALL, Frank Albert HALL, Charles Woodall ROBERTS.

Letter dated May 11, 1904 from Alfred Owen//Eric Carter Hall was sent back to the Home ten days ago, his employer complaining that he found his useless. This is, as you have noted, his fifth situation, and the boy seems, unfortunately, so wanting in ambition and generally incapable tht I feel at a loss to know what we can do for him. I have now, however, offered him to an old couple who require a quiet inoffensive sort of boy to do little light work about their place, and possibly this may prove to be a position that Hall is capable of fillling.

Daughter of Sarah Walker and Nelson Green of Gardham, Yorkshire, England
